Pecking the Plumage

Here the pair has moved 5 or 6 feet apart again. Cleaning the plumage has once again become an individual task. Unlike the large colonies of Emperor penguins, that huddle close together during the rough winter storms of Anartica, Yellow-eyed penguins tend to move about in very small groups (I spotted one, two, or three at a time.) They usually build solitary nests hidden in the bushes and the forests near the beach.
