I hadn't watched the news or read the paper, so I was completely
unaware that the aurora borealis was coming to town. You can
imagine my surprise, as I hiked down a trail, looked up, and
thought the sky to the north behind the mountains looked red.
Now I know that sometimes the city lights can throw their color
onto the clouds, but this light was red. I was so caught off
guard that I had to turn around and ask the people behind me if
the sky didn't look red to them. Once they confirmed that there
wasn't anything wrong with my eyes, I realized what I was seeing was the northern lights and began documenting the
moment. In the image above, the northern lights colored the sky
red, while the glow of the city lit up the trace of clouds on
the right, and the headlights of passing cars threw just enough
light, in a long exposure, to illuminate the rock formations. |
