I showed this image to people I met in New
Zealand. A few Chinese people laughed. I asked why. They said that, where
they came from, these flowers were considered weeds. At the time I
had no idea what they were thinking, or what they were getting confused
with. These were lupines, and my mother had planted them with some pride
in her flower garden in Pennsylvania when I was a child. While I was in
New Zealand I only saw them in a few selected spots, always many many
kilometers from the last spot, and they almost always seemed to be along the road in front
of a house. This lake was the only location I had seen where the lupines
had really spread out for an impressive photograph. Keep in mind, however,
that I was there in late fall, which is not a prime time for flowers to be blooming. I
have since done some research and have found that the lupine (which, of
course, is not native to New Zeland) is classified as an "invasive"
species. |
