This was the official residence of
the Thai kings from 1782 until 1925. The last two kings have
resided in the Dusit Palace, but several royal ceremonies and
state functions are still held here every year. It is one of the
most prominent tourist attractions in Thailand and still houses
the Emerald Buddha, which is considered sacred protector of
Thailand. I tried to see the Grand Palace three times
unsuccessfully. The first time I arrived at about 3:30 p.m. and
they said that they were closing. A second time they turned me
back because I was wearing sandals rather than proper shoes, and
a third time they said the grounds were closed because the Prime
Minister of Singapore was arriving. I didn't finally get to see
the palace until my school took our students there on a field
trip. This photo was taken from outside the walls of the palace,
which are quite high and surround the entire acreage. |
