While I photographed these two bulls mixing it up with
their antlers, I witnessed something that I have never seen before,
and may never
see again. This pair, which I am told are brothers, sparred lightly for a
minute or two, after which one of the bulls just wasn't interested and walked
off into the willows. It was still pretty early in the season, and his
testosterone just wasn't high enough to give a mouse's tail.
It's what happened next that was uniquely entertaining. His
brother was so full of it that first he jammed his antlers into
a bush and started shaking it. Then he got out into the field
and started shadow boxing, dancing and twisting all over the place
as if a hyper active imaginary bull opposed him. He followed
this with a 50 yard sprint across the field, and another bout of shadow
boxing. He dashed across that opening three times, each sprint followed
by shadow boxing, dancing and twisting. Just a few mintues earlier there
had been four of us photographing him, but when he turned and started walking toward
me I cleared out immediately. To me that was one of the most prudent things I have
ever done. Even though it was still too early for the rut, he was so
wrestless that he was just itching for a target!
Note: If you are reading this on your cell phone you can
probably double tap this box and it will fill your screen from
side to side, which will make it easier to read. You can double
tap again to zoom back out. The same is true of any of my
photos. |
