Most of the photos you will see of Tecumseh were extemporaneous,
completely his doing, entirely his own creation. Quite the
opposite, this photo not only was planned, but was planned for a
long long time.
Inspired by a Bev Doolittle painting of pinto horses in aspen
trees, I was sure Tecumseh, with his natural sled dog
camouflage, could blend in really well with the aspens. We tried
several times over a period of a couple of years, and the best
image we could create was taken on Boulder Mountain, but it was still far far from what I was hoping to achieve.
Finally, I was out working for the natural gas company
when I spotted this stand of ash trees, having been planted
long ago in the front yard of a house that was nestled in the foothills
above my home in Bountiful, Utah. Now all we had
to do was wait for a snowstorm. Early in the morning after this
invigorating snowfall, I lifted Tecumseh into the back of my
Dodge Ram, and off to the scene of photographic destiny we
raced. |
